Science, Technology and Society Programme
Overview
This is the first and only Master’s Degree Program with this name in Turkey. The program has an interdisciplinary structure that aims to provide a basis for fruitful dialogue by building a bridge between humanities and social sciences through science and technology studies and almost all courses are in English. The aim of the program is to transform students’ knowledge and experience gained during education from an interdisciplinary perspective to an academic study by approaching science and technology studies from cultural, sociological, anthropological, ethical and philosophical perspectives.
Aim
This Master’s Degree Program was founded in 2016 as one of the programs of the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences of Istanbul Technical University. The program started to take students in the Fall semester of 2016-2017 Academic Year. Each course, except non-credits (Seminar), is 7,5 ECTS. Students are expected to complete 60 ECTS in courses as well as to fulfill the thesis writing criteria (60 ECTS) in one of the topics of STS within at most three years. They complete 120 ECTS in total. The program’s language is English. It is the only Master’s Degree Program with this name in Turkiye. The program has Erasmus+ connections with “Science Studies” Master’s Degree Program of Aarhus University, Denmark and “Science and Technology Studies” Master’s Degree program of Munich Technical University, Germany, and "Techno-anthropology" Master's Degree program of Aalborg University, Denmark. Education in all programs are in English. “Science, Technology and Society” Master’s degree Program builds a bridge between humanities and social sciences and science and technology studies by concentrating on historical, political, sociological, cultural, ethical and philosophical perspectives of science and technology.
Audience
The program has interdisciplinary character, therefore it is open to any four-year-university graduates from all fields.
Graduates’ Working Areas
Graduates work either in public institutions related to science and technology policies, or in ethical commissions regarding science and technology, or in science centers, or in the media. They may also continue their acamedic life in Ph.D. Programs.
Programme Outcomes
- The ability to develop and increase the knowledge acquired in Science, Technology and Society based on the competency gained in the undergraduate level; to develop new types of knowledge by
interpreting and integrating this knowledge with the knowledge coming from different disciplines - To analyze the knowledge, problem-solving and skills acquired in Science, Technology and Society in inter-disciplinary studies by using the research methods of social sciences
- To execute and develop original research conclusions regarding Science, Technology and Society by developing new approaches and by taking responsibility in solving the complex problems
- To claim leadership in case an inter-disciplinary solutions, critical approach and actions for solutions
are necessary regarding Science, Technology and Society issues - To track record of current issues regarding Science, Technology and Society
- To evaluate and critically analyze the norms directing social relations by using the knowledge and
skills acquired in Science, Technology and Society - To execute the teamwork in compliance with Science, Technology and Society’s interdisciplinary
structure - To collect, interpret and present the solution proposals regarding Science, Technology and Society by considering the societal, scientific, cultural and ethical values
- To be aware of the continuity of the problems of Science, Technology and Society (Area Specific)
- To communicate the current developments in Science, Technology and Society and one’s own work
orally, visually and in written forms, by supporting them with quantitative and qualitative data and to
present them to other groups in and out of the field in international arenas with competence, at
least, in one foreign language and required computer program
